International Human Rights

1. A Quick Overview

The United Nations was created in San Francisco, it is headquartered in New York, and yet the U.S. avoids a commitment to global human rights and international law.

A society aiming for enlightenment cannot end its search at an arbitrary border drawn in the sand. Everyone deserves basic human rights.

The Free Republic is committed to joining all international instruments of human rights protection. These instruments and their protections are outlined in our U.N. human rights portfolio.

Amongst the portfolio’s commitments is a promise to ratify critical human rights instruments such as the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The titles alone hint to their importance. The U.S. is in a small minority of nations (such as Yemen, Iran and China) that have not supported these instruments.

Here is some suggested text to use:

Dear _______________,

Why is the U.S. not committed to the worldwide protection of human rights? It is ridiculous and saddening that the U.S.’s presence in this realm is so pitiful. The U.S. has not ratified the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, or even the Convention on the Rights of the Child. How can this be the case? This record places ‘the land of the free and home of the brave’ in the illustrious company of the most horrific human rights violators in the world, such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, China and Indonesia.

Where is the city upon a hill? Where is American exceptionalism? Where is our collective humanity?

Is the U.S. just a military force? We must set a better standard and participate in the world’s commitment to human rights protection. Please advocate for the ratification of the U.N.’s eighteen critical instruments of international human rights protection immediately.

This is not a political request. It is a plea for humanity.

Sincerely yours,

X
